Install an outdoor bench in an obvious location on or near the playground. Explain to children that when they would like to play with another child, they can sit on the bench. This gives the others a non-verbal cue expressing their desire to play with someone. Conversely, suggest that children pay attention if someone is sitting on the bench and to consider inviting them to join in their play.

Implementing the Buddy Bench as an option reduces children's fear of approaching peers and the potential of rejection. Additionally, it makes it obvious to caregivers which children desire cooperative play as opposed to solitary play. This way, caregivers can prompt and encourage cultivation of new friendships.
