The increasing concern over the effect of child care on children's lives has focused attention on the quality of that care. Since most out-of-home care is provided in family child care homes, the need has grown for an accessible, reliable, and thorough means of assessing the quality and suitability of such settings. Developed through lengthy field testing, research, and revision, the Family Child Care Environmental Rating Scale® consists of 32 items, organized under six major headings: Space and Furnishings for Care and Learning, Basic Care, Language and Reasoning, Learning Activities, Social Development, and Adult Needs.

Sophia G. ★★★★★

The revised edition's clearer scoring notes made our self-assessment so much faster than the old version. Spiral binding lies flat on the counter, which sounds small but helps when you're flipping between items during nap time.

Mia P. ★★★★★

The spiral binding makes flipping between the scoring sheets and the notes section so much easier during an actual observation. I've used it for two home visits now and the revised items are clearer than the older version I borrowed from a colleague.

George A. ★★★★☆

Used this to prep for our state licensing visit and the itemized scoring for family home settings made it easy to spot what to fix. Wish the spiral binding laid flatter on the table, but overall a solid working copy.
